Free to play VR is the future

Writer: Paul CousinsPaul Cousins

In 2024, the Meta Quest platform experienced unprecedented growth, attracting a significant number of new users. Notably, only 20% of Meta Quest 3S purchasers and 27% of Meta Quest 3 buyers were upgrading from previous Quest models, indicating that the majority were first-time users. This influx mirrors the expansion seen during the Nintendo Wii era, where gaming reached broader demographics.

A key factor in this growth is the rising popularity of free-to-play (F2P) titles, which have become a primary choice for many new users. While Meta highlights this trend as an opportunity for developers, it presents challenges for studios accustomed to producing premium, high-budget games. The shift towards F2P models has led to industry-wide changes, including layoffs and budget reductions in some veteran VR development studios.

Additionally, Meta's overhaul of the Meta Quest mobile app in July 2024, rebranding it as the Meta Horizon app, prioritized F2P Horizon Worlds content over premium paid offerings.

This change impacted the visibility and sales of big-name games, prompting developers to adapt to the evolving market dynamics.

Looking ahead, developers who can swiftly adjust to these shifts are more likely to find success. Meta has introduced new tools to assist developers in understanding user behavior, purchasing patterns, and engagement metrics. However, the landscape suggests a decreasing appetite for big-budget games on the Quest platform, with a growing emphasis on social and F2P experiences.

So, ultimately, while the Meta Quest platform's rapid expansion in 2024 has opened new avenues, it also signals a transformative period for developers. The current environment favors adaptable studios that can navigate the shift towards F2P and social-centric content, potentially at the expense of traditional premium gaming experiences.
